  • Emphysema
  • Refractory asthma

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a life-threatening condition that affects the lungs and the person’s ability to breathe. Pathologic changes in COPD occur in the large airways, the small bronchioles, and the lung parenchyma. The pathogenic mechanisms are not clear but are most likely diverse. Increased number of activated polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages release elastases in a manner that cannot be counteracted effectively by antiproteases, resulting in lung destruction.
