Dr. Bakkar studied medicine at Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt. She finished her residency training at the universities of Cincinnati (OH) and Louisville (KY), and then joined MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, to finish her fellowships in oncologic surgical pathology and cancer biomarkers in breast and gynecologic pathology. She held a position as an assistant professor at the Department of Pathology at the University of New Mexico, and currently she is an Associate Professor of Pathology in the Department of Pathology at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Bakkar's field of practice is mainly focused on breast and gynecologic cancers as well as cytopathology. She has been actively engaged in multiple translational type of research addressing potential biomarkers that can be used for targeted therapy, especially in patients with advance breast and/ or gynecologic cancer.
