Biography:
Peng Zhang was Born in 1940, Peng Zhang holds a master's degree, and is a professor, chief physician, and master's supervisor. He once served as Director of the Department of Internal Medicine and Director of the Department of Hematology (Rheumatology and Immunology) at the First Clinical Medical College of Harbin Medical University. He also held multiple important positions, including Member of the Chinese Society of Hematology, Review Expert of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Member of the Clinical Application Committee of the China Pharmaceutical Technology Association, Chairman of the Heilongjiang Provincial Society of Hematology, Chairman of the Heilongjiang Provincial Society of Blood Transfusion Technology, Vice Chairman of the Heilongjiang Provincial Society of Rheumatology and Immunology, Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Leukemia & Lymphoma, Member of the Academic Committee of Harbin Medical University, and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Harbin Medical University, etc.
He has conducted research on the method of intramedullary cavity drug injection and its application in the treatment of aplastic anemia, and reported on the dynamic balance and mechanism of human cyclic nucleotides, the changes of cyclic nucleotides in acute leukemia, as well as the relationship between the incidence of acute leukemia, aplastic anemia and ABO blood type.
Since 1992, he has led his team in the department to study the clinical application and mechanism of arsenic trioxide (As₂O₃) in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). From June 1995 to June 1996, he published three consecutive articles reporting that As₂O₃ has a significant curative effect on APL (including initial treatment, refractory and relapsed cases), and its mechanism lies in that As₂O₃ induces the differentiation and apoptosis of APL cells, etc.
This achievement won the Heilongjiang Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award and the Major Scientific and Technological Contribution Award of the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China (1998), etc. It was also listed in the 50-year (1958-2008) chronicle of international hematology by the American Society of Hematology (ASH), which praised it as "founding the discipline of tumor apoptosis therapy". His article "Seven-Year Research Summary (1992-1998) with an Analysis of 242 Cases" provides important clinical experience and guidance for the treatment of APL with As₂O₃.
In addition, he has explored and authored the book Arsenic Trioxide and Its Applications, and developed an As₂O₃ injectable powder and mercury chloride injection (for the treatment of DIC), obtaining two Chinese patents, etc.
