Title: MALDI-TOF-MS with machine learning for the diagnosis of disease.

Abstract:

MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry coupled to machine learning / artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms has significant potential as a diagnostic strategy for high-throughput and low-cost diagnosis of disease.  In this presentation, an overview of the MALDI-TOF technology will be presented, followed by an analysis of features which make this technique an exciting bioanalytical tool for high-throughput screening.  Our laboratory experience getting started with machine learning algorithms will then be leveraged to present an overview of how investigators can rapidly employ these techniques in their own works.  During the machine learning portion, a special focus on the analysis of MALDI-TOF data streams for dichotomous disease detection will be apparent, however, lessons learned may be applicable in a wide variety of fields.   The seminar will conclude by presenting recent case studies in animal disease diagnosis we have considered in our laboratory utilizing the MALDI-TOF with AI approach.  A brief discussion of opportunities and challenges for future research will be provided.

Audience take Away:

  • Basic introduction to MALDI-TOF – MS
  • The introduction to machine learning platform will help attendees apply this technology in their work
  • The MALDI-TOF and machine learning approach is highly flexible and applicable to a wide array of problems.
