Abstract:

Context and objective: Prostate cancer (CaP) is a hormone-dependent cancer. In our settings, most affected patients often arrive at the locally advanced stage or at the metastatic stage. This justifies the choice of androgen deprivation as a mode of treatment. The objective of this study was to describe the sociodemographic characteristics of patients with CaP. Identify the period during which the disease remains susceptible to androgen deprivation. Evaluate the prognosis of patients in terms of survival.

Methods: It is a retrospective observational study concerning the evolution of patients treated for CaP. It covered 51 cases and took place at the Pointe à Pitre clinic
(CPAP) in Matete over a period of 4 years (from March 2014 to June 2018).

Results: the mean age of patients was 69.4±9.7 years (37-92 years); 39.2% of patients with CaP were between 70-79 years old; 45.1% had consulted for dysuria and 25.5% were hypertensive. All had performed the prostate biopsy, 47.1% were diagnosed at the metastatic stage, with the PSA level ≥100 ng/ml, the Gleason score 8-10 and at the clinical stage TNM3-4. 23.5% were surgically castrated and 3.9% had undergone radical prostatectomy. 41.1% had resisted castration within a median of 1.4.[1-3] years of treatment response. The median survival was 30 months, with a mean survival of 26.6 months.

Conclusion: Prostate cancer mainly affected patients in the 70 to 79 age bracket
year. Its diagnosis was generally late with a high castration resistance rate and a median survival of 30 months.
