About the Oral Cavity Surgery Session

Oral cavity surgery is a type of dental surgery that focuses on the structures in and around the mouth, including the teeth and gums. An oral cavity surgeon provides care and treatment to patients who have various conditions, such as impacted teeth, jaw joint disorders, temporomandibular joint disorders, cleft lip and palate syndromes, benign and malignant tumors of the oral cavity, and other disorders affecting the jaw, mouth, and face. Oral cavity surgery involves full mouth reconstruction, surgical repositioning of the jaw, cleft palate repair, chin and cheek surgeries, and facial trauma surgeries. It can also involve reconstructive transplants, blocked airway treatments, and the insertion of dental implants to replace missing teeth. During an oral cavity surgery procedure, the physician may remove diseased or damaged teeth, reshape the gums, and apply prosthetics or implants where teeth have been extracted. In some cases, the surgeon may need to evaluate the surrounding facial structures. This can involve reconstructing facial features or using implants to recreate features, such as the brow and nose. Before undergoing oral cavity surgery, a full examination is performed to determine the exact type and location of the problem. Depending on the complexity and severity, the surgeon will assess the risk factors for the operation and discuss the best options with the patient. They are then able to put together the best plan for a successful surgery. The goal of oral cavity surgery is to restore the patient’s oral health and facial aesthetics. This can be done through reconstructive surgery, is also vital for restoring overall health and wellbeing. Surgery is also important in preventing further or more serious damage from occurring. Recovery time for oral cavity surgery depends on the complexity and extent of the procedure. Though each procedure is different, most patients can expect to resume normal activities within two weeks, with full recovery within 6 to 8 weeks. Ultimately, oral cavity surgery can drastically improve a person’s oral health and prevent further health complications. It is essential to seek advice from your dentist or oral surgeon if you notice any changes to your mouth or jaws that may suggest the need for oral cavity surgery.
