Title : A comparison of two methods of maxillary skeletal expansion and their effects on anatomical Structures

This study compares changes in anatomical structures of the mid-facial region with the MSE (maxillary skeletal expander) and the SARPE (surgically-assisted rapid palatal expansion) procedures, to judge if both are equally efficacious at expansion. The palatal suture becomes more difficult to separate after the early teen years so older patients with a maxillary transverse skeletal discrepancy may require surgery for orthopedic expansion. Compared to surgery, the MSE (with four bi-cortical TADs) offers a less invasive method of orthopedic expansion for nongrowing patients. Landmarks from pre- and post-treatment CBCT images were evaluated using 3D Dolphin Imaging. Thus far, 9 SCARPE and 63 MSE patients have been analyzed from the clinics at St. Barnabas Hospital and a single private orthodontic office, respectively. The preliminary data indicate that the MSE can produce similar amounts of maxillary skeletal expansion compared to the SARPE procedure.
