Endodontists complete advanced education in the areas of anatomy, physiology, radiology, and pathology. An endodontist performs a wide variety of treatments to the pulp of the tooth, generally involving the removal of the infected pulp, or the diseased nerve, and the cleaning and filling of the root canals. Endodontists also perform specialized surgeries in the pulp chamber, such as endodontic surgery, apicoectomy, and avulsion. Endodontists have the skills and the expertise to detect and diagnose potential problems with the structures of the teeth, and recommend the appropriate treatment. They are able to analyze and evaluate dental X-rays, and examine the patient’s bite to ensure that the teeth are healthy and functioning correctly. Endodontists have the experience and training to use state-of-the-art technology when performing root canal therapy, and can detect and repair root fractures. Endodontists can also recommend prescription medications, such as antibiotics, to help relieve symptoms and prevent dental infections. In addition, endodontists are often called upon to repair or replace tooth crowns, which are an important part of the crown-and-bridge dental restoration procedure.
