Root canal therapy, also called endodontics, is a type of dental treatment used to repair and save a tooth that has been severely damaged by decay, infection, or trauma. Root canals are often performed by a certified endodontist or a general dentist who specializes in endodontic treatment. The procedure involves a series of steps to remove the damaged area, clean it out, and fill it with an inert material. During the procedure, the innermost chamber of the tooth is reached by drilling a hole through the crown of the tooth. The dentist then uses special instruments to reach and remove any damaged or dead pulp tissue from the inside of the root Canal system. Once the damaged tissue is removed, the area is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Afterward, the root canal is sealed with a material called gutta-percha and sealed off with a permanent dental filling. In some cases, a crown may be placed over the tooth to protect it from further damage. This portion of the tooth must be cleaned and treated on a regular basis to avoid further damage. Root canal therapy can often be completed in one or two visits. It is a common, low-risk procedure and usually takes fewer than two hours to complete depending on the complexity of the case. After the root canal therapy is complete, the patient should experience a return to their previous level of oral function and sensitivity. Most patients report experiencing little to no pain during and after the procedure. Root canals are an effective treatment for tooth decay, injury, infection, or trauma and can help save a tooth that may otherwise be lost. It is important to take good care of your teeth and practice good oral hygiene to help avoid the need for a root canal. Regular visits to the dentist can help detect any warning signs of dental problems, including the need for root canal therapy.
