Conjunctival Tumor

A conjunctival tumor refers to an abnormal growth or mass that develops on the conjunctiva, which is the thin, transparent membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. These tumors can manifest as benign or malignant growths and may vary in size, shape, and appearance. Benign conjunctival tumors are non-cancerous and typically do not invade surrounding tissues. They are often localized and may not pose a significant threat to vision or overall eye health. Examples of benign conjunctival tumors include papillomas and nevi. Malignant conjunctival tumors, on the other hand, have the potential to spread to nearby tissues and may pose a risk to vision and systemic health. Squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma are examples of malignant conjunctival tumors. The exact cause of conjunctival tumors is not always clear, but factors such as chronic irritation, ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure, and certain viral infections may contribute to their development. Symptoms can include redness, irritation, a visible mass on the eye, and changes in vision. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough eye examination, including the use of specialized instruments and imaging techniques. Treatment options vary depending on the type and extent of the tumor, ranging from observation for benign tumors to surgical excision or other interventions for malignant cases. Regular eye exams, especially for individuals with risk factors, can aid in early detection and timely management of conjunctival tumors. As with any medical condition, consulting with an eye care professional is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
