Rectal Cancer

Rectal cancer is a form of cancer that originates in the cells of the rectum, the last portion of the large intestine. This type of cancer usually develops slowly over many years, starting as small growths called polyps. Over time, these polyps can transform into cancerous cells, leading to the development of rectal cancer. One of the key risk factors for rectal cancer is age, with the majority of cases occurring in individuals over the age of 50. Other risk factors include a family history of colorectal cancer, certain hereditary conditions, inflammatory bowel diseases, and a diet high in red or processed meats. Symptoms of rectal cancer may include changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, abdominal discomfort, unintended weight loss, and fatigue. It is crucial for individuals experiencing these symptoms to consult with a healthcare professional promptly. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history review, physical examination, and various imaging tests such as colonoscopy and imaging studies like CT scans. Treatment options for rectal cancer depend on factors like the stage of the cancer, its location, and the overall health of the patient. Common treatment modalities include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Regular screenings, a healthy lifestyle, and awareness of potential symptoms are essential in the early detection and management of rectal cancer. As with many cancers, early intervention can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment and long-term survival. Individuals should consult with healthcare providers to discuss personalized screening plans and maintain open communication regarding any concerns related to colorectal health.
