TMJ disorder (or TMD) is an issue that affects many people. It relates to the jaw joints, or temporomandibular joints, which are located on either side of the face near the ears. This disorder can range from mild to severe and can cause a variety of symptoms. When someone has TMJ, it can cause headaches, earaches, and facial pain near the jaw. The jaw may become tired or sore after eating or talking. It can also cause the jaw to lock up or make it difficult to open the mouth all the way. There may also be a clicking or grating sound when opening and closing the mouth. In more severe cases of TMJ, there may be ringing in the ear, dizziness, or vision problems. When it comes to TMJ, dental science must be taken into account. Poor dental hygiene can lead to TMJ pain and it can also be worsened by incorrect alignment of the jaw, teeth, or even the bite. Many times, TMJ can be alleviated through the use of custom-crafted night guards made for the individual's mouth that help keep the joint in proper position. In addition to night guards, other treatments include physical therapy, relaxation techniques, and injections to help reduce inflammation on the joint.
