Title : Bioavailability and bioaccessibility of soil, spinach and onion leaves in some selected areas of mubi north local government adamawa state, nigeria

Abstract:

The bioavailability and bioaccessibility of an element represents the fraction of the element/compound that is soluble in the gastrointestinal tract and, therefore, available for absorption. There is a growing concern about the possible negative effects on human health induced by high levels of heavy metals in soil. It is recognized that high levels of heavy metals are not necessarily indicative of the adverse effects. The effects are related to bioavailabilable fractions, which are involved in plant uptake and transfer to the food chain. This study is to investigate the bioaccessibility of potential toxic elements in some contaminated soil from selected locations in Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa State., Heavy Metals were determined using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer for Cu, Zn, Cd, Mn, Pb, Ni, and Cr, respectively. The result obtained from Shuware shows the ranges of 0.4855±0.001mg/kg to 0.0155±0.001mg/kg, 2.265±0.03mg/kg to 6.345±0.01mg/kg, 0.3655±0.007mg/kg to 0.0023±0.0001mg/kg, 0.256±0.002mg/kg to 0.0168±0.0002mg/kg, 14.62±0.02mg/kg to 71.15±0.04mg/kg, 3.43 ±0.02 to 11.615±0.01 and 3.12±0.02 to 0.255±0.01 of Cd, Fe, Pb, Cr, Mn,Zn and Cu, respectively, similarly the samples obtained from Wuro Bulde reveals the following results 0.3445±0.0010 mg/kg to 0.0113±0.002 mg/kg, 6.11±0.02 mg/kg to 21.325±0.01 mg/kg, 0.0027±0.0011 mg/kg to 0.2775±0.001 mg/kg, 0.036±0.001 mg/kg to 0.1625±0.01 mg/kg, 14.62±0.02 mg/kg to 71.15±004 mg/kg, 11.15±0.04 mg/kg to14.62± 0.02 mg/kg, 0.25±0.01 mg/kg ±3.12.0.02 mg/kg While Nikel was absent in all samples. It was observered that the concentration of the heavy metals was significantly higher in soil and lower in spinach. This findings offer support on the use of Bioaccessibility of plants that are efficacious, sate, practical, reliable, affordable, accessible, self-administered and culturally acceptable
