Title : Biological control against pathogens of the main crops in Tlemcen region (Algeria)

Abstract:

Pesticides are often considered a quick and inexpensive solution for controlling weeds and insect pests in urban landscapes. However, pesticide use comes at a significant cost. Pesticides have contaminated almost every part of our environment. Pesticide residues are found in soil, air and in surface and ground water across the countries. Pesticide contamination poses significant risks to the environment and non-target organisms ranging from beneficial soil microorganisms, to insects, plants, fish, and birds. Contrary to common misconceptions, even herbicides can cause harm to the environment. In fact, weed killers can be especially problematic because they are used in relatively large volumes. The best way to reduce pesticide contamination in our environment is for all of us to do our part to use safer, non-chemical pest control (including weed control) methods. Our study focused on biological control strategy against pests, fungi and bacteria of the main crops in the Mediterranean region such as orange, olive and some other crops. The unusual combined antibacterial and antifungal action obtained in this study, mainly due to the protective action provided by its phenolic compounds, essential oil and diatomaceous earth. The results obtained were very interesting as an alternative to the irrational use of pesticides whose effects on human health (especially the brain with Parkinson's disease, some cancers), animal and the environment are well known.

Audience Take Away

  • This topic will help the audience to better understand the problem of abusing use of pesticides and to be sensibilised against it,s wide spreading
  • this research can help other faculty  to expand their research or teaching
  • This study provides a practical solution to a problem that could simplify or make a designer’s job more efficient
  • I hope that this research will  provide new strategies to improve to encounter pesticide contamination problem
  • The results obtained were very interesting as an alternative to the irrational use of pesticides whose effects on human health (especially the brain with Parkinson's disease, some cancers), animal and the environment are well known.

Biography:

Dr. Gaouar studied Biology at Tlemcen University, Algeria and started to study weed control since 1986. She then joined the research group of Prof. Debouzi who was supervising her work at the Institute of Biology, in France. She received her PhD degree in 1996 at the same institution.  She obtained the position of an Associate Professor at Tlemcen University. She has published more than24 research articles in SCI(E) journals.)
