Oral and maxillofacial pathology, formerly known as oral pathology, is a field of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and research of disorders that affect the mouth and face (i.e., the mouth, the jaws and the face). It can be classified as a dental and pathological specialty. Oral and maxillofacial surgery, as well as oral medicine, are closely related specialties in maxillofacial pathology.
In recent years, the evolving microbiology of odontogenic deep space infections has piqued people's interest. The importance of anaerobic bacteria in producing maxillofacial infections has been highlighted due to advances in isolation and culturing techniques. Anaerobes are also thought to play a role in maxillofacial infections, according to recent research.
Maxillofacial and oral surgery is a surgical speciality that focuses on facial reconstructive surgery, head and neck surgery, facial trauma surgery, oral cavity surgery, mouth suregry and jaw surgery, and facial aesthetic surgery.
