A transducer is a tool that transforms energy from one form to another. Typically, a transducer transfers a signal from one kind of energy to another. Transducers are frequently used at the edges of automation, measurement, and control systems, where electrical impulses are translated into and out of other physical values energy, force, torque, light, motion, position, etc.. Transduction is the process of transforming one type of energy into another. Mechanical transducers change physical quantities into mechanical quantities or the opposite; electrical transducers, on the other hand, change physical quantities into electrical quantities or signals. Examples of these include a linear variable differential transformer LVDT, which measures changes in displacement position, and a thermocouple, which converts temperature variations into a tiny voltage.
