Cancerous growths in the mouth can be caused by a variety of factors, such as tobacco and alcohol consumption, genetics, infection, and environmental exposures. Oral cancers can occur in any part of the mouth, such as the lips, tongue, gums, palate, and throat. Symptoms of oral cancer can include persistent sores, lumps, or thickening of the skin; difficulty speaking, chewing, or swallowing; and pain or numbness in the mouth or face. Oral cancer is usually diagnosed with a physical examination and biopsy. If a suspicious spot is found, the doctor may collect a sample of the tissue for further testing. Imaging tests, such as X-ray, CT scans, and MRI, may also be used to help diagnose oral cancer. Treatment for oral cancer depends on the stage and location of the cancer. Surgery may be used to remove the cancerous tissue, followed by radiation or chemotherapy to kill any remaining cancer cells. If the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, additional treatments may be necessary. Preventing oral cancer is the best way to decrease the risk of developing it. Avoiding or limiting the use of tobacco and alcohol, and wearing sunscreen on the lips may help reduce the risk. Regular dental check-ups, self-exams, and brushing and flossing teeth regularly can also help identify signs of cancer early. Cancerous growths in the mouth can be a serious health concern, but early detection and treatment can improve the chances of successful recovery. It is important to be aware of the risk factors and signs of oral cancer, and to seek medical care if any suspicious symptoms are noticed.
