Canker sores and cold sores are two distinct types of mouth sores that can cause pain and discomfort. Canker sores are small, shallow lesions that may appear on the inside of the cheeks, lips, or soft palate. Cold sores, on the other hand, are caused by the herpes simplex virus and usually appear on the outside of the lips and mouth. The treatment of canker sores and cold sores can vary depending on the severity of the sores. Mild cases of canker sores can be treated with over-the-counter topical medications such as benzocaine and other numbing agents. For more severe canker sores, a doctor may prescribe a corticosteroid ointment to reduce inflammation. Cold sores can be treated with antiseptic creams, antiviral medications, and other topical treatments. It is important to start treatment as soon as possible to reduce the pain and duration of the outbreak. If the cold sore is more severe, antiviral drugs, like acyclovir, may be prescribed by a doctor. In addition to medications, there are also steps you can take to reduce the pain and discomfort of canker sores and cold sores. Eating a balanced diet, avoiding spicy and acidic foods, and avoiding foods that may irritate the sores can help reduce pain. Applying ice packs or cold compresses to the area can also help reduce swelling and pain. Finally, it is important to practice good oral hygiene to help prevent further outbreaks. This includes brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and using a mouthwash that contains fluoride. It is also important to avoid sharing utensils, towels, and other items to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria.
