Caries, also known as tooth decay, is a common and widespread problem in oral health care, and it's crucial for people to learn about it. This is especially true as the aging population grows and dental care needs become more complex. Caries is a disease that affects tooth enamel, often resulting in cavities or holes in the teeth. It is caused by a process known as demineralization, where sugars and/or starches, as well as bacterial acid, over time weaken the enamel and cause it to begin to erode and form cavities in the tooth structure. This process is often combined with the normal human mouth bacteria that feeds on the sugars and starches in food, releasing acids that are very harmful to tooth enamel. As caries progresses, it weakens the enamel and exposes the dentin. If neglected, the decay can become severe and, ultimately, cause tooth loss. Early detection and treatment are key to managing caries, as its severity can vary from person to person. Fluoride treatments, sealants, restorative dentistry, dietary changes and good oral hygiene have all been shown to help slow down or prevent caries. It's important to remember that prevention is always the best approach – brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting the dentist for regular cleanings and oral health exams are recommended by most dental care professionals. For families, proactive education and encouragement to establish good oral hygiene habits at a young age can be very important. Caries is a serious threat to oral health, and should be treated seriously and addressed promptly. People should do their part to protect their oral health and prevent the debilitating effects of caries.
