Dental disease is an often overlooked yet important public health problem in many countries. It affects all ages, but is most common among children, adolescents and older adults. It can range from mild gum problems to serious periodontal and tooth decay diseases. It is important to understand the cause of dental disease and how to prevent it. Poor oral hygiene habits, including not brushing and flossing daily, can lead to plaque buildup on teeth, which can cause cavities. Poor nutrition is also a major risk factor. Sugary foods, fruit juices, and carbonated drinks can contribute to the development of tooth decay. Smoking is another risk factor for dental diseases. Tobacco use can lead to wear of the enamel, staining of the teeth, and oral cancers. Other factors contributing to dental problems include heredity, dry mouth, medications, and medical conditions. Dental diseases can have a significant impact on an individual's quality of life. Toothaches, bad breath, tooth loss, and eating difficulties can affect an individual's self-esteem and social functioning. It is also important to recognize that dental diseases can lead to other health issues, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. It is important to practice good oral health habits and see a dentist regularly to prevent dental diseases. Dental cleanings should occur at least twice a year, referred to as prophylaxis, x-rays should be taken when recommended by a dentist, and fluoride treatments can often be helpful in prevention of cavities. By understanding the common causes of dental diseases and how to prevent them, individuals can make sure they have healthy teeth and gums throughout their lives.
