Dental studies is a branch of science that focuses on the prevention and treatment of dental diseases and conditions. It includes the study of the biology of the teeth and associated structures, the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the teeth and associated structures, and the research into how to keep the oral cavity healthy. Dental studies also includes studies related to dentures, orthodontics, endodontics, cosmetics, and public health dentistry. In dentistry, the emphasis is on preventive care. Dental studies have shown that brushing and flossing on a regular basis are key to making sure that the teeth remain healthy. Fluoride treatments help to re-mineralize the tooth enamel, preventing decay. Sealants can create a barrier to help prevent bacteria from occupying the teeth. Regular exams and X-rays are useful for the detection of decay or other problems, so that preventive treatments can be implemented in order to preserve the teeth. In dental studies, students also learn about different types of tooth replacement, such as dentures, implants, and bridges. Dental implants involve surgically inserting an artificial tooth root into the jawbone. This is attached to a crown, bridge, or denture, providing artificial replacement teeth. Dentures are removable replacements, and bridges involve filling the gap between two healthy teeth with an artificial tooth. Dental studies also include learning the principles of cosmetic dentistry. Procedures such as tooth whitening, veneers, and reshaping can be used to enhance the appearance of a person’s teeth. Orthodontics, which involve the use of braces and other corrective appliances, is also studied, providing another layer of health and beauty to the smile. Finally, public health dentistry is a large part of dental studies. There is an emphasis on the prevention of dental diseases and how to treat them, while also understanding how different cultures and lifestyles play a role in oral health. Dental professionals also learn about the different types of health insurance and how it relates to the treatment of dental diseases. They also learn about the outreach programs aimed at educating the public about teeth and oral health.
