A dental case report is a comprehensive summary of a patient's dental condition, typically written by a dentist or dental practitioner. Written mainly for the purpose of documenting and disseminating knowledge, dentists use case reports to educate both themselves and other dental professionals on new or complicated treatments. As evidence-based medicine is becoming increasingly important in the field of dentistry, case reports are becoming increasingly valuable as a record of how certain diseases or conditions are treated. Case reports typically include details such as the patient's medical history, their presenting symptoms, physical and radiographic examination results, diagnoses, the dentists' proposed treatment, assessment of the treatment's effectiveness and, in some cases, their complications and the final outcome. While case reports can take any form, most follow a similar narrative and include important details such as a comprehensive patient history, a description of the patient's presenting symptoms, details about their diagnosis, and a discussion of the treatment they received. The dental practitioner must also assess the overall result of the treatment and consider any complication that may arise in the future. The case report should also include an explanation of any clinical decision making that was utilized during the patient's course of treatment, and a discussion of the findings of the clinical research that was conducted on the patient's condition. Case reports are not only an essential part of dental practice, but they also play an important role in education and research. Case reports can provide important insight into new and innovative treatments, help improve diagnostic processes, and uncover issues with existing protocols and treatments. As such, dentists should strive to write well-documented and detailed case reports, providing a concise summary of the patient’s condition, relevant findings, and a description of the procedures performed and results obtained.
