Maxillofacial Pathology

Maxillofacial Pathology

Maxillofacial Pathology refers to the diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities, primary diseases and conditions affecting the areas within the head and neck. In dental science, maxillofacial pathology involves the diagnosis and management of various diseases and conditions of the face, jaws, oral cavity, including the teeth, gums and salivary glands. The diagnosis and management of maxillofacial pathology includes identifying, evaluating and treating a wide range of diseases and conditions. The process typically involves a comprehensive evaluation of dental and facial structures, medical history and the presence of any risk factors. Diagnostic tests such as imaging, biopsies, laboratory tests and physical exams may be performed. Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, drugs, lifestyle changes or a combination of such treatments to address the underlying cause or condition. Some of the common conditions faced in maxillofacial pathology are temporomandibular joint disorders, facial trauma, oral and facial cancers, odontogenic cysts, salivary gland diseases, developmental abnormalities such as dysmorphic conditions and, supernumerary teeth, and inflammatory conditions such as periodontal diseases or medical illnesses that affect the face, head and neck such as diabetes and autoimmune diseases. Maxillofacial pathologists are specialist dentists who are responsible for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of diseases and conditions of the face and neck region within the dental setting. They use evidence-based approaches and employ a range of treatment modalities to best manage the patient’s particular condition. Maxillofacial pathologists play a key role in maintaining individuals’ oral and dental health and in managing conditions that can worsen if left undiagnosed or untreated. When appropriate, they may also refer patients to other specialists within the dental setting for further management. A comprehensive team approach may also be adopted, which includes additional specialists such as ENTs, speech therapists, nutritionists, and radiologists to address the range of issues pertaining to maxillofacial pathology.
