Oral veneers, also known as dental veneers, are an increasingly popular cosmetic dentistry procedure used to improve the appearance of teeth. Veneers are thin shells of porcelain, composite material, or occasionally, tooth-colored resin that bond to the front surfaces of teeth. They can be used to improve the shape, size, color, and overall appearance of teeth, and help conceal issues such as gaps, misshapen teeth, and discoloration. Veneers may also be used to repair chips, cracks, and other damage to teeth. Oral veneers are customized to each patient’s individual needs. The dentist will begin by taking dental impressions, photos, and x-rays of the patient’s teeth in order to create a model used to design the veneer. The patient’s bite and overall facial features will be taken into account when designing the veneer. Once a design is chosen, the veneer is fabricated in a dental laboratory. During the placement process, the dentist will begin by preparing the tooth, which involves removing a small amount of enamel to make room for the veneer. The area will then be cleaned and etched to allow for better adhesion. The dentist will apply the adhesive to the veneer and gently place it on the tooth. They may use a curing light to harden the adhesive, and will then adjust the bite as needed. Finally, the veneer will be polished and polished again after a few days in order to achieve the desired look.
