Periodontists are highly-trained dental professionals with expert knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease. As part of their duties, they provide preventive care to maintain healthy gums and perform specialized procedures to restore and retain damaged tissues. Periodontal disease is a progressive infection of the tissues that support and attach teeth to the jawbone. The primary cause of periodontal disease is plaque, an accumulation of bacteria on the tooth surfaces. If left untreated, this bacteria can attack the gums, causing redness, swelling, and bleeding. As periodontal disease progresses, it can cause receding gums, loose teeth, and the eventual loss of teeth. Periodontists use a variety of treatments to combat periodontal disease. When the disease is in the early stages, treatment may include a thorough cleaning known as scaling and root planing. This deep cleaning removes plaque, bacterial toxins, and tartar deposits above and below the gumline. For advanced cases, periodontists may utilize other therapies such as laser treatment, antibiotics, or gum surgery. Periodontists may also perform reconstructive procedures to restore and maintain damaged tissues. These procedures may include crown lengthening, soft tissue grafts, and guided tissue regeneration. These treatments are performed to reduce bacterial infection, strengthen gums, and help stabilize the attachment of the gums to the teeth. Periodontists are an integral part of a patient's overall long-term oral health care. By working with other dentists, periodontists can prevent, diagnose, and treat disease and help preserve the long-term health of their patient's teeth and gums. Through careful examination and treatment, periodontists help to maintain healthy smiles and reduce the risk of long-term oral health problems.
