When it comes to dental health, tooth extraction is one of the most important procedures that can be used to maintain a healthy mouth. Tooth extraction is the removal of damaged, decayed, or infected teeth from the mouth. In most cases, a tooth can be saved with a root canal or other treatments, however, when the tooth cannot be saved, extraction is the only option. There are several reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted. Decay, infection, or trauma can all lead to a damaged tooth that needs to be removed so that it does not continue to cause further damage. Additionally, certain orthodontic problems or tooth crowding can lead to a tooth extraction as well. The tooth extraction procedure varies depending on the status of the tooth. If the tooth is exposed, removal is usually quickly and simply accomplished by gently rocking the tooth and removing it from the socket. Impacted teeth, those that are not exposed to the mouth, often require more complicated procedures. The process starts with the dentist numbing the area with a local anesthetic. The tooth may also need to be sectioned into pieces in order to make the removal easier. After the tooth has been removed, the dentist will check the area and determine if any additional treatment or stitches are required.
