Gingivitis is a dental health condition that affects the gums and can lead to serious complications if left untreated. It is one of the most common forms of periodontal disease, a condition that affects the tissues that surround and support your teeth. This can lead to the destruction of these tissues, which can even cause tooth loss. Gingivitis is caused by the build-up of bacterial plaque on the teeth and gums. Bacteria react with the proteins in saliva and mucus to create a sticky slime which coats your teeth and gums. If this plaque is left untreated, it can cause the gums to become irritated and inflamed, resulting in gingivitis. The early signs of gingivitis can be easily detected. Swollen, red or tender gums that may bleed upon brushing are all tell-tale signs. There may also be a build-up of bad-tasting and bad-smelling bacteria around the teeth and gums. Another symptom of gingivitis is the formation of pockets between the teeth and gums, where food can become stuck and bacteria can start to accumulate. It is important to visit a dentist as soon as possible if you think you may be suffering from gingivitis. The dentist will inspect your mouth and recommend an appropriate course of treatment. Regular brushing and flossing are important steps in the prevention of gingivitis. Special mouthwashes are available to reduce the amount of bacteria in the mouth and prevent plaque from forming. In more serious cases, professional dental treatments such as scaling or root planing might be necessary to remove the bacteria and significantly reduce the symptoms of gingivitis. If gingivitis is left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis, a more advanced form of periodontal disease. This can be much more damaging to your tooth and gum health and can lead to tooth loss and abscesses. Gingivitis is a serious condition and should not be overlooked. Visiting your dentist regularly and practicing good oral hygiene can go a long way in preventing the onset of gum disease. With the right preventive measures, you can take control of your oral health and keep your smile looking great.
