Infant oral health exams are an important part of preventive dentistry. While a child’s teeth may not be visible until the age of two or three, it is never too early to start thinking about oral health care. An infant oral health exam is a comprehensive evaluation of a baby’s mouth for signs of infection, disease, decay, or other abnormalities. During the exam, a dentist or hygienist will use a small mirror and a soft brush to gently inspect the inside of your child’s mouth. This includes checking the gums, lips, cheeks, tongue, and roof of the mouth for any signs of decay, infection, or other abnormalities. The dentist will also check the baby’s teeth, if they have erupted, for any signs of decay that may have started. The dentist may also take X-rays of the baby’s mouth to get a better look at the teeth and underlying structures. X-rays are only taken if your dentist suspects there may be a problem, as they are not necessary for every exam. The goal of the infant oral health exam is to diagnose and treat any existing problems, as well as identify any potential problems that may arise in the future. If the dentist finds any issues, they will discuss them with you and develop a treatment plan to address the problem. In addition to the exam, the dentist may also discuss good oral hygiene habits with you and your child. This can include brushing and flossing techniques, dietary advice, and fluoride treatments. Infant oral health exams are an important part of preventive dentistry. They help to identify and treat any existing problems, as well as identify any potential problems that may arise in the future.
