Anemia and Iron Disorders

Anemia and Iron Disorders

Anemia and iron disorders represent some of the most common hematological conditions worldwide, affecting individuals across all age groups. Anemia is characterized by a reduction in red blood cell mass or hemoglobin concentration, leading to impaired oxygen delivery to tissues. Iron deficiency anemia remains the most prevalent form and is often associated with nutritional deficiencies, chronic blood loss, malabsorption, or increased physiological demands such as pregnancy. Conversely, iron overload disorders, including hereditary and secondary hemochromatosis, result from excessive iron accumulation that can damage vital organs such as the liver, heart, and endocrine glands. Accurate diagnosis requires careful evaluation of hematologic indices, iron studies, and underlying etiologies. Advances in laboratory diagnostics, including biomarkers like ferritin, transferrin saturation, and hepcidin, have improved disease characterization. Management strategies range from iron supplementation and dietary modification to chelation therapy and phlebotomy, depending on the disorder. Ongoing research focuses on iron metabolism regulation, novel therapeutic targets, and population-level strategies to reduce the global burden of anemia.
