Myelodysplastic Syndromes

Myelodysplastic Syndromes

Myelodysplastic syndromes are clonal disorders of hematopoietic stem cells characterized by ineffective blood cell production and increased risk of progression to acute leukemia. Patients often present with anemia, infections, or bleeding due to cytopenias. Diagnosis requires bone marrow examination and cytogenetic analysis. Risk stratification guides treatment decisions, which range from supportive care to disease-modifying therapies and stem cell transplantation. Advances in molecular profiling have enhanced prognostic accuracy and therapeutic targeting. Research continues to explore novel agents and combination therapies to improve survival and quality of life. Early diagnosis and individualized management remain critical challenges in this complex group of disorders.
