Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes

Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes

Bone marrow failure syndromes are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by impaired hematopoiesis, resulting in one or more cytopenias. These conditions may be inherited or acquired and can present at any age. Clinical features include fatigue, recurrent infections, bleeding tendencies, and increased risk of malignant transformation. Diagnostic evaluation requires comprehensive laboratory testing, bone marrow examination, and genetic studies in suspected inherited cases. Management depends on disease severity and etiology, ranging from supportive care with transfusions and growth factors to immunosuppressive therapy and stem cell transplantation. Advances in molecular genetics have improved understanding of disease mechanisms and enabled earlier diagnosis. Research continues to focus on improving transplant outcomes, reducing treatment-related toxicity, and identifying novel targeted therapies. Bone marrow failure syndromes remain a critical area in hematology due to their complexity and potential progression to life-threatening conditions.
