Platelet Disorders
Platelet disorders involve abnormalities in platelet number or function, leading to bleeding or thrombotic complications. These conditions may be inherited or acquired and can present with bruising, petechiae, mucosal bleeding, or, in some cases, thrombosis. Diagnostic evaluation includes platelet counts, functional assays, and bone marrow examination when indicated. Advances in laboratory techniques have improved the identification of inherited platelet function disorders. Management focuses on treating the underlying cause, preventing bleeding, and providing supportive therapy when necessary. Emerging treatments aim to modulate platelet production and function more precisely. Platelet disorders are an important area of hematology research due to their impact on hemostasis and thrombosis.
