Cell and Tissue Science is a multidisciplinary field that focuses on understanding the structure, function, and behaviour of cells and tissues in health and disease. It encompasses various disciplines, including cell biology, molecular biology, histology, physiology, and pathology, and plays a crucial role in advancing our understanding of fundamental biological processes. At the cellular level, cell and tissue science explores the molecular mechanisms that govern cellular functions such as proliferation, differentiation, migration, and apoptosis. Researchers investigate how cells communicate with each other and their microenvironment through signaling pathways, cell-cell interactions, and cell-matrix interactions. By unraveling the complex networks of molecular interactions within cells, scientists gain insights into normal cellular physiology as well as the underlying causes of diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and metabolic diseases. In tissue science, researchers study the organization, structure, and function of tissues, which are composed of specialized cells organized into complex three-dimensional structures. Tissue science encompasses histology, the study of tissue morphology and organization at the microscopic level, as well as physiology, which focuses on the functions of tissues and organs in the body. By understanding how tissues are formed during development and how they maintain homeostasis in adults, researchers can identify mechanisms of tissue regeneration and repair and develop strategies for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
