Milk Vita, Bangladesh

Abstract:

In the context of Bangladesh milk production structure is running on still to-date following the traditional/informal method and rest non-traditional/formal method. But fortunately, nowadays the traditional method is improving to the modern formal domain in mammoth motion. The lion share of milk is producing from small scale milk producing farmers around the country. It is said that the 15 branded milk processors in Bangladesh is producing and handling about 10% of total milk production in structural based, such as the only pioneering cooperative milk processors’ Milk Vita and rest of others branded milk processors. The 8FYP plan sets a target to expand the production of milk from 9.92 million metric ton in 2018-19 to 16.37 million metric ton in 2024-25. These targets will be achieved through enhancing productivity by using modern biological techniques, adopting appropriate disease diagnosis and prevention and by addressing climate smart livestock interventions for safeguarding nutritional food security. There remains an acute shortage of milk, though the gap between demand and production is reducing. However, the growth in demand for milk is growing very slowly. In the 2021-22 fiscal year, the production of fresh milk in Bangladesh was 13.07 million MT and demand 15.66 million MT. For mitigating the desired nutritional status in Bangladesh a World Bank Funded (USD:500 million) mega dairy project is running on where root based smallholders milk production, collection, processing, transportation and above all marketing are addressed through Dairy Hub/VMCC Model nation widely. In Dairy HUB/VMCC model the root based local milk producers’ will supply their farm produced milk to the VMCC where raw milk after collection will be chilled and then delivered to the Dairy HUB. In the Dairy HUB milk delivered from VMCC finally will be processed for producing different types of milk and milk products, may be pasteurized packet milk, ghee, butter, cheese, yogurt, laban, different types of sweetmeats, etc.
