Biography:

Prof. Dr. Varughese George is currently the Director of Amity Institute of Phytochemistry and Phytomedicine, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. Formerly he was the Head and Chief Scientist of Phytochemistry and Phytopharmacology Division of Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. He started his scientific career at CSIR-Regional Research Laboratory (CSIR-RRL), Jammu/Srinagar, now known as CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM). He also worked as Lecturer in Chemistry at St. Teresa’s College, Kochi, Kerala.

He worked on Himalayan Medicinal and Aromatic plants particularly of the North Western Himalayas from 1970 to 1992. He also worked on some exotic economically important plants such as Pyrethrum (Chrysanthemum cinerarifolium), Hops (Humulus lupulus), Belladonna (Atropa belladonna), Lavender etc.
