Abstract:

Africa's progress in reducing hunger and poverty has suffered significant setbacks in recent years. Multiple shocks, including global and regional conflicts and the impacts of pandemics, have increased the prevalence of undernutrition and child malnutrition. In addition, significant food shortages coupled with micronutrients deficiencies persist in regional territories. Although food systems have the potential to help improve these conditions, food insecurity persists despite numerous interventions, both continental and foreign. Food insecurity, aggravated by deficiencies in key micronutrients, affects millions of people in Africa, posing challenges in terms of access, health and social justice. In the face of these worrying situations, new commitments are needed to create a new dynamic across a number of drivers (socio- economic, demographic, political and governance, infrastructure and technology, territorial and environmental). In order to provide convincing data for effectives actions and build an equitable, resilient and sustainable food system, this study explores the causes and impacts and proposes solutions for improvement.

In the face of these worrying situations, new commitments are needed, for a new dynamic on a number of drivers (socio-economic, demographic, political and governance, infrastructural and technological, territorial and environmental). In order to provide convincing data for effective action and build an equitable, resilient and sustainable food system, this study explores the causes and impacts and proposes solutions for improvement. The overall objective is to mobilise knowledge to identify critical issues affecting the sustainability of food system dimensions; food security, nutrition and health; environmental health; and equity. At the specific level, the aim is to take stock of the situation, describe and measure the characteristics of the phenomena, present the complexities of the different forms of food shortages and deficiencies, and propose ways forward to achieve operational excellence.

The methodologies involve collecting secondary data and primary data from local and regional government policy-makers, social workers, experts and consultants, researchers and the people concerned. Analyses of the secondary data and consultations will enable us to refine our understanding of dietary situations and deficiencies, and to discuss potential levers. They will also help to map the retroactive influences or interactions of responses to the critical and dynamic challenges specified, and in relation to production, distribution and consumption environments.

The conclusions of this paper should present the challenges of food insecurity, existing mechanisms, agricultural and food issues, and avenues for improvement and sustainable development.
