Abstract:

Despite advances in medical technology and clinical expertise, gaps in communication, empathy, and understanding between clinicians and patients continue to negatively impact healthcare outcomes. This session, Bridging the Gap Between Clinicians and Patients, explores how intentional communication, clinician accountability, and a deeper understanding of the patient perspective can transform care delivery and improve patient experiences and outcomes.

Drawing from real-world clinical environments and lived patient experiences, this presentation highlights the disconnect that often exists between clinical intent and patient perception. Attendees will examine how everyday interactions—such as the use of language, tone, time constraints, and assumptions—can influence patient trust, adherence, and engagement in care. The session emphasizes the role of clinician self-awareness and accountability in creating psychologically safe and respectful care environments.

A central focus of the presentation is understanding healthcare through the patient’s lens. Participants will gain insight into the emotional, physical, and cognitive burdens patients carry, many of which remain invisible in medical records. By recognizing these factors, clinicians can strengthen therapeutic relationships and foster shared decision-making that empowers patients as active partners in their care.

The presentation also addresses the importance of mindfulness, cultural humility, and inclusivity in patient interactions, particularly when working with minority and underserved populations. Attendees will explore how unconscious bias and systemic barriers can impact communication and trust, and will be introduced to practical strategies that promote equity, reduce disparities, and enhance patient-centered care.

Through reflective discussion, storytelling, and actionable frameworks, this session equips healthcare professionals with tools that can be immediately applied in clinical practice. Participants will leave with a renewed understanding of the human side of healthcare and concrete strategies to bridge gaps between clinicians and patients—ultimately improving communication, strengthening trust, enhancing clinician satisfaction, reducing burnout, and driving more meaningful, sustainable, and effective healthcare outcomes across diverse care settings.
