A good drug target is one that is relevant to the disease phenotype and may be modulated therapeutically. The identification and early validation of disease-modifying targets, known as target discovery, is an important first stage in the drug discovery process. Indeed, the completion of the human genome project has fueled interest in determining protein function in both academia and industry. Individualized pharmaceutical therapy tries to produce predictable and optimal therapeutic responses in specific patients. To do so, production platforms and technology that can personalize products to individual patient needs are required.
