Bio-Ontology and Data Mining

Bio-Ontology and Data Mining

???Biology differs from physics and much of chemistry in that, while it has numerous laws and models, only a handful of them can be expressed mathematically. It is not possible to take a protein's amino acid sequence, apply a formula, and obtain a set of properties such as correct three-dimensional shape, functionality, modification forms, and so on. Ontologies are a technique or technology used in computer science to represent and convey knowledge about a domain by modelling the objects in that domain and their relationships. These relationships define the attributes of those entities; in other words, what it's like to be a part of the domain being modelled. A concept of reality, or simply reality, is represented by an ontology. In bioinformatics, bio-ontologies are essential components of knowledge management. Bio-ontologies that are rich and rigorous should be able to represent biological information with high fidelity and resilience. Bio-ontologies' richness is a prerequisite for diverse and efficient reasoning, and hence querying and hypothesis validation.
