Quantitative and Qualitative Profiling of Proteins

Due to its high detection sensitivity, specificity, and speed of analysis, mass spectrometry (MS) has become the method of choice for bioanalysis, including disease diagnostics, protein analysis, proteomics, and lipidomics. Mass analysis, in particular, is increasing all the time, allowing for higher mass resolution, sensitivity, and better characterization of biomolecules and other compounds such as proteins, peptides, lipids, and medicines. Quantitative proteomics is a method of quantifying the number of proteins in a material using analytical chemistry. Protein identification methods are identical to those used in general (i.e., qualitative) proteomics, with the addition of quantification as a new dimension. Proteomic analysis can be done in two ways. Top-down proteomics involves ionising complete proteins or large pieces and then analysing them with mass spectrometry. Bottom-up proteomics is the second widely used method, in which proteins are degraded by proteases to create peptides.
