Personal Genomics

Personal Genomics

Personal genomics, sometimes known as consumer genomics, is the field of genomics that deals with the sequencing, analysis, and interpretation of an individual's genome. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis chips (usually 0.02 percent of the genome), as well as partial or whole genome sequencing, are used in the genotyping stage. Once the genotypes have been determined, the individual's variants can be compared to existing literature to evaluate the likelihood of trait expression, ancestry inference, and disease risk. One of the manifestations of personalized medicine is the recent advent of the personal genomics sector. Faster and less expensive DNA genotyping (and sequencing) is fuelling optimism that corporations would be able to sequence an individual's complete genome, speeding the benefits of translational medicine and delivering personalized risk information.
