Molecular Evolution

Molecular Evolution

The process of change in the sequence composition of cellular components such as DNA, RNA, and proteins through generations is known as molecular evolution. To understand patterns in these changes, molecular evolution employs evolutionary biology and population genetics ideas. The rates and effects of single nucleotide changes, neutral evolution vs. natural selection, the origins of new genes, the genetic nature of complex traits, the genetic basis of speciation, the evolution of development, and the ways that evolutionary forces influence genomic and phenotypic changes are all major topics in molecular evolution. The molecular and population genetic processes that work on a genome produce the content and structure of that genome. Mutations will produce novel genetic variations, which will spread and then be maintained in populations due to genetic drift or natural selection.
