Gastrointestinal Microflora

The gastrointestinal microflora, or gut microbiota, is a complex community of trillions of microorganisms that reside in the digestive tract. These microbes play essential roles in digestion, immune regulation, and overall health. In recent years, scientific interest in the gut microbiota has exploded due to its wide-ranging effects on various health conditions, from gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to metabolic diseases like obesity and diabetes. Nutritional research explores how different foods, especially prebiotics and probiotics, influence the composition and function of the gut microbiota. For example, a diet rich in fiber from vegetables and fruits can promote beneficial bacteria, while high-fat, high-sugar diets may disrupt microbial balance. Understanding these interactions is key to developing dietary strategies that improve gut health and prevent disease.
