Maternal and Infant Nutrition

Maternal and infant nutrition is fundamental for ensuring a healthy pregnancy and supporting a newborn's development. A mother’s diet during pregnancy directly impacts the growth of the fetus, with critical nutrients such as iron, calcium, folic acid, and omega-3 fatty acids playing vital roles in brain development, bone formation, and overall health. Adequate nutrition can prevent complications like low birth weight, premature birth, and congenital defects. Post-birth, breastfeeding is widely recommended for the first six months, as breast milk provides essential antibodies and nutrients that protect infants from infections and promote growth. Researchers study how maternal nutrition before, during, and after pregnancy influences infant health, aiming to establish guidelines that ensure both mother and child receive the best possible start. Continued efforts focus on addressing challenges like maternal malnutrition, nutrient supplementation, and the promotion of breastfeeding in diverse socioeconomic contexts.
