Nutrition and Cancer

The relationship between nutrition and cancer is a subject of extensive research, underscoring the critical role that dietary habits play in cancer prevention, progression, and recovery. Nutrition plays a significant role in the prevention, development, and management of cancer. Certain foods contain antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C, and E, and phytochemicals that protect cells from damage that could lead to cancer. Dietary fiber, found in plant-based foods, is particularly important for reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.

Conversely, diets high in processed and red meats, saturated fats, and added sugars have been linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer. Alcohol consumption is another factor that can elevate cancer risk, especially for cancers of the mouth, throat, liver, and breast. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and physical activity is crucial, as obesity is a known risk factor for several types of cancer. While no single food or diet can prevent or cure cancer, adopting a diet that emphasizes plant-based foods and limits processed and high-fat foods can contribute to a lower cancer risk and support overall health and well-being.
